about

Born in Boston, November 12, 1923 Charlie Mariano started his career as professional musician in 1953 with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. After moving to Los Angeles he worked with Frank Rosalino, Shelly Mann and others. In 1959 he married Japanese pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and founded a quartet with her. In 1962 he played with Charles Mingus, recording two albums with him. After spending two years in Japan with Toshiko he moved back to Boston and taught at Berklee for six years during wich time he also played with Astrud Gilberto. Since 1971 he lived in Europe working and recording with groups like the United Jazz&Rock Ensemble, Embryo, Steely Dan, Pork Pie as well as musicians like Philip Catherine, Jasper van’t Hof, Rabih Abou-Khalil, Dino Saluzzi.
“Mariano’s whole career is an object lesson in gradual artistic growth. Like Miles Davis, he has at every stage played contemporary music, always remaining open to new ideas and never allowing his creative arteries to harden” Ian Carr
Quique Sinesi, born in Buenos Aires in 1960 is one of the most important musicians in the comtemporary music scene of Argentinia. He has frequently toured Europe with Dino Saluzzi’s Band and with Pablo Ziegler (Astor Piazolla’s pianist).
Since working with Dino Saluzzi in the late 80‘s (where he first met Sinesi) it was Charlie Mariano’s wish to create a fusion of New Tango and Jazz. When I asked him a few month ago to do a recording for enja he told me the thing he really wants to do is a recording with Quique Sinesi. Mariano’s passionat saxophon sounds fit perfect to Sinesi’s sophisticated harmonies. A wonderful combination of musical intelligence and emotion.
